HMC August 2023 Newsletter

Greetings all HMC Members,

Our annual meeting last month was a great success.  The venue was well received, the meal was good, and financially we came out ahead.  At the meeting, I along with the officers made a few promises for the 2023-2024 year. The number one promise was to have more events.  The second was to fix the email and club announcements issues.

The first promise is well on its way to realization.  We will have two events in August, two in September (not counting the HMEIC), and the fishing tournament in October.

The second promise is proving to be more of a challenge.  On the club side, the webmaster has examined his program and worked out any limitations in sending announcements out to the membership.    Members are now asked to examine their emails for any restrictions or limitations as well as review their membership profiles for correct and updated emails. Please confirm your contact information is correct for yourself and others in your organization on the HMC website to ensure your team is receiving all communications and updates.

Let us all remember that without the payment of membership dues, not all events and charitable donations will be possible.  We were able to increase our donations over the previous year, but the officers and board members have high goals for this year including adding a partial scholarship to be awarded to an undergraduate student working towards a career in the marine industry. Therefore, we need members to go to the HMC website, make sure your contact information is correct, pay dues, and attend events.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our next event and keeping up with everyone throughout the year on our new LinkedIn member page.

Best Regards,

Gregory R. Schuelke

Skipper

Upcoming Events

Texas Hold’em Tournament:

On August 24, 2023, we will be joining the Houston Claims Association’s annual Texas Hold’em Tournament.  Houston Claims Association is a similar club that promotes the insurance industry and is made up of professionals serving in the insurance industry – mainly claims professionals.  Funds generated are used by the Houston Claims Association towards its annual scholarships awarded each April.  We have the opportunity to join with a portion of the entry fees and sponsorships going towards our future scholarships and donations.

I have led the tournament for the Houston Claims Association for the last few years and have seen it grow to a great success.  I want HMC to have the same success going forward and ask each member to sign up individually, or best sponsor a table for co-workers, clients, and friends.

The official announcement was posted this week on the HMC website.  Again, if you decide to attend, please sign-up through the HMC website so a portion of the proceeds go towards our scholarship and donation funds.

Memorial Trail Ice House:

More details on this to come, including the application requirements and criteria for selection. We hope this scholarship becomes a new annual club tradition!

Annual Dues

Annual dues and company sponsorships have historically allowed HMC to support the marine industry with donations and other financial support.  Our new website in 2021-2022 solved many of the historical issues with club directories and renewals but added a few different difficulties. Technology is changing faster than in years past.  Members are changing firms, and firms are merging and changing names.  Our website only works as well as the information we provide it!  Please be sure to confirm your contact details are correct. .

Please use the following instructions to confirm your contact information is up to date:  visit www.houstonmarinersclub.com and select “About Us” on the top tab and then “Log in” (if not automatically logged in) and “My Account” at the bottom in “Quick Links” and follow the instructions.  If you are unable to enter the site, then select the “Join Us” tab.  Next, click the blue “Sign Up Now” button, click “Select” for the HMC annual 2023-2024 dues choice and follow the steps under “Account Information.”

Note:  You will need to go through these steps even if you are not a new member and previously had an account under the old website.

If you are a Past Skipper, you should have been provided with a confidential discount code to ensure you do not pay during this process.  Email a club officer if you need the code.  Also, if you are having difficulty paying as a current member or editing your current profile, please reach out to a current officer for assistance.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] with any questions. The Club’s First Mate Nikki Howes at [email protected] or Purser Misha Paltiyevich at [email protected] are also available to provide assistance.
